SPARK Somerset, a registered charity in Somerset has announced the opening of a Digital Cafe in the Gateway in Yeovil in a bid to get people online and increase their skills and confidence in the digital sphere (March 2023). The sessions take place every Tuesday from 10 am until 12 pm upstairs at Gateway Cafe. Will Palmer, SPARK Digital Coordinator says, “We know that services and communication are increasingly moving online, which excludes a huge number of people in our community. By offering a space to get people online and giving them the tools to improve their confidence with technology we can have a real impact by making people feel included. I’d like to invite anyone who feels like they’d like to learn more about how to get online to pop along to our Digital Cafe to see how we can help them with queries about online shopping, connecting with friends and family, organising GP appointments, ordering prescriptions and finding out what’s on in their area, or even more general enquiries about all things digital.
We suggest people bring their own devices or use one of ours to learn a new skill or to develop their confidence. The cafe will be running its Digital Cafe every Tuesday at 10 am and is also looking to recruit volunteer Digital Champions to offer support at sessions in the future. Carl Butler, SPARK volunteer says: “We are looking for volunteers who are confident being online and who have the drive to help people in their community. They don’t need to be technology experts and full training will be provided by Spark Somerset. Volunteer Digital Champions can join us for as many hours a week as they choose, making this a great opportunity for anyone looking for a flexible role with a low time commitment. Volunteers are also offered accredited courses through an online training platform, which are great for professional development and add to a CV so are perfect for people looking to gain skills and experience in the voluntary sector. I would encourage potential volunteers, or anyone with questions about our Digital Cafes to get in touch with our Emily Rushton by email at emily.rushton@sparksomerset.org.uk
SPARK has set up several digital cafes across Somerset, including Wincanton (Balsam Centre on Wednesday mornings), Chard (Eleos cafe Friday mornings) and Queens Camel (every second Tuesday of the month in the memorial hall). They also plan to open further cafes across the Mendips in the coming months.
