Yeovil 1 – 0 Solihull Moors

Yeovil Town secured their second victory of the season with a 1-0 victory over Solihull Moors at Huish Park.

Chiori Johnson’s second-half goal was the difference as the former Torquay United man produced a man-of-the-match performance.

In truth, the Glovers were in control throughout and thoroughly deserved all three points.

Chris Hargreaves made three changes to the side that drew away to Dorking, with Ben Richards-Everton returning to the back four, Sam Perry added to the midfield and Charlie Wakefield leading the line. Max Hunt, Morgan Williams and Will Dawes all returned to the bench.

It was fast start, with clear-cut openings falling in the first ten minutes to both sides. The first fell to the visitors with four minutes played as Josh Kelly poked wide after pinball in the box.

At the other end, Chiori Johnson, who was Town’s bright spark in the first half, had the ball laid on a plate by Charlie Wakefield, but the former Torquay United man fired over.

With fifteen played, there were vocal claims for a handball from the Glovers players. Wakefield fired a first-time effort on goal which was blocked by a Solihull player, but the referee remained unmoved.

Solihull’s best chance of the half fell to Andy Dallas who found himself through on goal on the counter, but an excellent stop from Grant Smith kept the game level.

In the closing stages of the half, Yeovil worked good positions, but the Solihull defence did well to marshal the Town forwards wide.

The second half really burst the game into life, with the Glovers taking the game to the Moors.

Just minutes in, Perry had Yeovil’s first effort of the half as the Walsall loanee fired wide from the edge of the box.

Looking full of confidence, Yeovil took the lead through Johnson with 57 minutes played. After Worthington turned the ball over high up the pitch, he fired on goal and forced a save from Moulden, but Johnson was there to pounce, tucking the ball home and celebrating with the Thatcher’s Gold Stand.

Much has been said about Town sitting off after taking the lead, but that wasn’t the case today, with Yeovil continuing to pressure the Solihull goal, with Moulden the busier goalkeeper until the end of the game.

Looking to kill the game, Yeovil were somehow denied with three chances in quick succession as Alex Fisher, Pearson and Morgan Williams all had efforts blocked & saved with 15 to go.

In the final ten minutes, Moulden, who is on loan from Wolves until January, ensured Solihull still had a glimmer of hope, producing superb stops to deny both Fisher and Pearson.

It really took until stoppage time for Yeovil to be put under sustained pressure, but excellent defending saw the green and whites through to three points.
