Parts of Somerset have been moved into the highest drought category to protect water supplies. The 'severe drought' designation means the lack of water is affecting daily life and having a lasting impact on farming, communities and nature. The government says the severe drought designation, which affects both South West Water and Wessex Water customers, is intended to allow for steps to be taken to safeguard supplies before disruption occurs.

A Chard man has been jailed for attacking a woman. Appearing at Taunton Crown Court, Alistair Rutter, aged 38, of Furzehill, in Chard, was convicted of causing the woman grievous bodily harm and also of driving a vehicle without insurance whilst disqualified. Rutter was jailed for six years and given six points on his licence for the driving offences.

A new group's been formed with arts organisations to try and save Taunton’s Brewhouse Theatre from closure. It follows Somerset Council withdrawing its yearly subsidy to the Brewhouse, with theatre due to shut at the end of the month. Taunton Town Council has joined the group and is offering financial support to keep the Brewhouse open.

Tesco in Yeovil is recruiting for temporary staff for the busy festive period. The positions involve serving customers and picking online orders for home delivery. Hourly pay rates start at £13.28. Staff working night shifts will be given an additional £2.35 per hour. Tesco says applicants don’t need a CV or prior retail experience to apply.

A 99-year-old former Somerset woman has become the oldest women to ever wing walk on a bi-plane. Helga Duffy, who lived in Frome, beat the existing Guiness World Record, set by a 97-year-old woman last year.
