Two people were arrested on suspicion of racially motivated public order offences during an anti-immigration protest held in Yeovil at the weekend. The demonstration, billed as Yeovil Calling: Stop Immigration and Two-Tier Policing, saw around 60 people march through the town centre on Saturday. Police say around the same number of people took part in a counter-demonstration and, apart from the two arrests, the event passed off without any major incidents.
Women in Somerset now have access to two brand new mobile breast screening units. They replace the aging vehicles and will be used to visit each area of the county every three years.
NHS van drivers based in Bridgwater, supplying hospitals across Somerset with essential medical equipment, will walk out on strike tomorrow in a pay dispute. They're among 200 GXO-employed drivers across England who have voted for industrial action after rejecting a four percent pay offer. The drivers transport a range of essential medical equipment, including bandages, dressings, gowns, gloves and needles.
Two brothers, who attacked door staff at two Yeovil nightspots, have each been given suspended prison sentences. Jimmy Doggrell, aged 22, and Thomas Doggrell, aged 25, from Sherborne, pleaded guilty to using or threatening unlawful violence towards staff at Chicago's and Boujee Lounge in Stars Lane in Yeovil, ripping a bodycam off one worker, when they appeared before local magistrates. They given eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and told to pay compensation of £250 to each of their victims.
A drought permit has been approved for Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor, which is currently only 18% full. The permit has been issued to South-West Water by the Environment Agency, who’re also asking for a non-essential use ban to run alongside the current hosepipe ban.
