Yeovil MP Adam Dance has backed calls for a cap on heating oil prices. The government is making fifty-three million pounds available to help households affected by rising costs linked to the war in the Middle East. Mr Dance says Somerset has a high number of residents living in fuel poverty and needs extra support.

Invitations are being sent out to those in Somerset eligible for the latest Covid vaccine. Spring boosters are being offered to people aged 75 and over, and those with weakened immune systems.

Land with planning permission for a new care home in Chard has been sold. The site on East Street, near the town’s Lidl supermarket, has consent for a 70-bedroom facility. Agents Christie & Co say it’s been bought by Country Court Care, which operates 49 homes across England. The company says the development could create up to 80 jobs.

Up to 100 new homes could be built in Martock if revised plans are approved. Martock LLP previously secured outline permission from Somerset Council for housing on Coat Road, along with a woodland and community orchard. Now, Countryside Partnerships Ltd and Magna Housing Ltd have submitted joint proposals to develop the site. A decision is expected in early autumn.

A pub near Chard has closed just four months after reopening. The Windwhistle Inn reopened last December after shutting in November 2024. It’s understood the building has been bought by Cricket St Thomas Golf Club, which plans to reopen it as a pub and restaurant, though no date has been confirmed.
