Plans have been submitted to build 30 new homes in Ashill. MJL Holdings wants to develop land off Windmill Hill Lane, next to the village recreation ground. The developer has pledged more than £83,000 for a new public open space and £18,000 towards local NHS facilities, if the scheme goes ahead. Somerset Council is expected to decide the application before Christmas.

As the heatwave continues, a Somerset air conditioning business says demand for its services has never been higher. Wilkins Plumbing, based in Glastonbury, says it's receiving around 30 calls a day from people looking to install air conditioning.

Police have charged a 53-year-old man with assault following a disturbance outside Wetherspoons in Yeovil. Magistrates heard Gary Catton was involved in an altercation at the William Dampier pub in Lower Middle Street on the night England played Norway in the World Cup. He has been released on conditional bail and is due to appear at Taunton Crown Court on August the 24th.

Somerset Council has been issued with an official government notice ordering it to improve its finances. The Council, which declared a financial emergency three years ago, has been served with a Best Value Notice by the government, requiring it to report back on its finances every 3-months.

And Morrisons has confirmed it will close its Glenthorne Avenue store in Yeovil on Saturday, August 1st. The supermarket says rising operating costs have made the store unviable. It's one of a number of former McColl's stores closing as part of a nationwide review.
