Religious artefacts with a value of around £90,000 have been stolen from Sherborne Abbey. Police say a processional cross, two verges and a bishop’s crook were taken in the break-in on Tuesday night. Police ask that anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in Hospital Lane, Abbey Road, Church Lane, and Half Moon Street at around 9 pm on Tuesday should call the non-emergency number 101.
A Chard man’s been banned from entering two supermarkets in the town following a spate of thefts. Oliver Caulfield of Brutton Way was appearing at Taunton Magistrates Court on 12 counts of theft that included stealing spirits and joints of meat. Caulfield who admitted all the offences was granted court bail, with conditions not to go to two supermarkets in Chard, pending a sentencing hearing in October.
Shepton Mallet Prison’s future as a visitor attraction has been secured. It follows the sale of the site to the Cove Group who had operating the prison as a tourist attraction on a short-term lease.
The National Farmers Union in Somerset says food could be in short supply this autumn due to poor crops and yields caused by wet weather. Data from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board shows wheat crops are at their lowest in twenty years, while the NFU says 65 percent of farmers’ incomes have dropped.
