    The go-ahead has been given to build a new all-weather sports pitch at Preston School. Bruton Post Office, closed in July, is soon to re-open.     The go-ahead has been given to build a new all-weather sports pitch at Preston School, off Monks Dale, in Yeovil. The artificial surface will be laid over an existing grass pitch and enclosed within a 4.5 metre high fence. The school says the pitch will not be used after 6 pm to minimise noise disturbance to nearby residents

    Bruton Post Office, closed in July, is soon to re-open. The new branch will be within the Premier Shop on the High Street and will open for business at the end of November.

    Two men from Crewkerne, convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to a horse, have been banned from keeping horses. Magistrates in Yeovil were told that Kieran Hodges of Cowen Close and Reginald Cooper of Furland Road in Crewkerne were using a horse and cart on the B3168 Ilminster to Curry Rivel Road when they were seen by a passerby kicking the horse as it lay on the ground unable to get up. Cooper was disqualified from keeping a horse for ten years and Hodges from keeping a horse for five years. The pair were also ordered to pay fines of £980, together with a victim surcharge. 

    A café in Chard run by a Portuguese family has closed after 15 years of trading in the town. Saraiva's Café had been a popular meeting place in the town for local Portuguese people, especially those employed at the former Oscar Mayer factory. 

    TV personality, Robert Rinder, better known as Judge Rinder from ITV, made a surprise appearance in the village of Croscombe at the weekend, opening a children's play area. The play area has been paid for through local fundraising and a grant from the National Lottery. 

    Young Farmers Clubs in Somerset are on the lookout for new members. The Federation is open to anyone aged between 10 and 28 and you don't have to be a farmer to get involved.
