A former school in Sherborne has been badly damaged by fire. The blaze at Newall House, which closed as a school in 2000, broke out at around 4 pm yesterday with reports of flames seen coming out of the roof. In September last year, Dorset Council was warned the empty Grade-11 listed building had become a target of anti-social behaviour and could be at risk of arson.

A care home in Yeovil has been rated outstanding following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. Cookson’s Court, off Preston Road, received the top rating, with inspectors praising staff for their dedication.

Public spaces in West Coker owned by Somerset Council are being handed over to the parish council. The transfer of assets includes land at Font Lane and Lakefields with access to Sampsons Wood.

Somerset Council has delayed a decision on plans to build fifty-six homes in Somerton. The development is the first phase of a scheme by Bloor Homes to build 130 properties off Bancombe Road at Somerton. Somerset Council’s Planning Committee South voted to postpone a decision until more details were known about providing a safe walking route for children attending the nearby King Ina Church of England school.

A plot of woodland and pastureland on the Blackdown Hills has sold for £128,000 at auction. The land, located on Ford Street, includes a timber cabin and covers 6.55 acres. It was advertised with guide price of £80,000 but exceeded expectations by a further £48,000
