Plans for a new railway station in Langport remain stalled in Whitehall, according to Somerset Council. The council says it remains committed to delivering a station for the town, but the final decision rests with the Department for Transport. If approved, the station would be built off the A372 Wincanton Road in Huish Episcopi.
Plans to build 50 new homes in Broadway, near Ilminster, have been refused by Somerset Council. The proposed development off Pound Road, close to the A303, was turned down because residents would not have safe walking access to local services. The council also said the scheme failed to fit with the character of the village.
Mecca has closed its bingo hall in Taunton after 45 years, saying rising operating costs have made the venue financially unviable. The grade-2 listed building on Corporation Street originally opened as a cinema in 1932 and is owned by Somerset Council.
A Roman gold ring discovered near Ilminster is set to go on public display at The Museum of Somerset. Known as the Ilminster Ring, it was found by a metal detectorist in 2018, and is believed to date from around AD 297.
Somerset Council says water fountains in Yeovil’s Triangle, in Lower Middle Street, are being switched off during very hot weather. The authority says the fountains are turned off when temperatures exceed 25 celsius because additional treatment and monitoring would be needed to keep the water safe.
