A defence firm based in Somerset has said the investment plan announced by the government has provided certainty for the industry. Thales Underwater Systems work with sonar technology and have around a thousand people working at their site in Templecombe. An additional 15 billion pounds will be spent on defence, less than the ministry of defence had asked for.

It’s feared Somerset jobs could be lost after a judge approved a restructuring plan for 150 high street TG Jones stores. The premises formerly belonging to WH Smith are facing potential closure and whilst specific stores are yet to be confirmed, TG Jones outlets in the county include Taunton, Wells, Frome, Weston and Minehead.

The community facilities team at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating after receiving national recognition for the way meals are served to patients across its community hospitals. The team redesigned the service to focus on quality, consistency and a more personal experience. The changes were recognised at the Community Hospital Association’s Innovation and Best Practice Awards, which this year marked the programme’s 25th anniversary.

24 new homes could be built in the village of Ilton if plans are approved. Local company, Otter Construct Ltd, intends to build the houses on land immediately to the east of 15 recently constructed homes along the newly named St Katherine’s Close. Somerset Council is expected to make a ruling by Christmas.

A 78 year old from Taunton has taken on a motoring challenge to raise funds for the MS Centre in Dorset. Wynford Jones hit the road yesterday in a small K R 200 Messerschmitt, a car built in the 1950s, and is making his way from the county town to Lands End and back again.
