Police say a fire at the former Oscar Mayer food factory in Chard was started deliberately. The blaze – the second in less than a week – broke out on Sunday night, with huge plumes of black smoke spreading across a wide area. Police are asking nearby residents with relevant CCTV, doorbell and dashcam footage to please come forward.

Yeovil College says the order with Leonardo in Yeovil to build new medium lift helicopters for the RAF is vital to its future. The College has training contracts with Leonardo worth £1.2 million. CEO Mark Bolton says without the NMH contract, Leonardo’s investment in the college would have been at risk.

A former NHS inspector claims that, after witnessing poor care in the baby unit at Yeovil Hospital, her advice was not heeded by hospital managers. Amanda Ford says that had her comments been acted upon at the time, the maternity unit could have avoided closure.

Junction 22 at Burnham-on-Sea on the M5 will be closed at night this week. It’s part of ongoing work to make the Edithmead Roundabout off the motorway into a through-about. Junction 22 will shut from 9 pm until 6 am the following morning, up until Friday.

A seven-foot dragon will be visiting towns and villages in our area during the next few weeks to promote Somerset Day. The large-scale replica beast has been built by students at Taunton College to represent what makes Somerset special. Somerset Day 2026 takes place over the weekend of May 9th and 10th.
