A Somerset man is urging people with multiple sclerosis to be more open with friends and family about the disease as part of a week of awareness raising about MS. Stewart Gould, aged 78, from Ditcheat, was diagnosed with the neurological condition 16 years ago. Initially, Steward passed off his symptoms as being a leg injury, but since he opened up about his illness, he says no one has treated him any differently.

Station Road in Castle Cary has reopened following emergency repairs to a sinkhole. However, the footpath between Victoria Gardens and Almshouse Close on Station Road remains closed.

Plans have been submitted to carry out major improvements to Dillington House near Ilminster. In the application, the owner of Dillington House, Lord Ewan Cameron, says he wants to unlock the main house for use as a hotel and wedding venue. Dillington House closed in September 2023, having been leased to Somerset County Council as a wedding venue and for providing adult education services.

A week of events is underway in Somerset to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe. On Thursday, May 8th, the official VE Day, Yeovil Town Council and the British Legion will hold an event at St. Johns Church starting at 4:30 p.m., culminating with the lighting of beacons at St. Johns and Wyndham Hill.

A café in Crewkerne has been granted an alcohol licence. The Cosy Café on Middle Path can now sell alcohol from 5 pm to 9 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and from 11.30 am to 9 pm on Saturdays. The licence was granted despite some residents claiming it might result in a noise nuisance.

A set of new practice nets have been officially opened at Yeovil Cricket Club’s ground in Westbourne Close. The previous practice nets were destroyed in the storms in February. The new nets have been named in memory of club member Nick Dyke, who died earlier this year.
