Concerns are being raised over the maintenance of the River Cary, following reports of planned cutbacks by the Environment Agency. The Somerset Rivers Authority has called for the reversal of all withdrawal decisions relating to main river maintenance in the county. This comes after the Environmental Agency’s announcement in mid-August to stop maintaining a significant proportion of rivers and waterways after receiving less funding from the Treasury than requested. The Somerset Rivers Authority chairman, Mike Stanton, represents a number of areas that were badly hit by floods between 2012 and 2014, and intends to raise the issue further at the board’s next meeting in September.
It could be an earlier harvest for Somerset cider growers this autumn. The warm weather and lack of rainfall in the summer months means apples could be dropping from the trees sooner than expected.
The Teals Farm Shop on the A303 at South Cadbury has revealed plans to broaden its services. The business is requesting permission from Somerset Council to add more retail space, enhance takeaway food facilities and expand the car park. The plans suggest ‘significant economic benefits’ and expect the development of the site to create new job opportunities.
