Yeovil-based charity, School in a Bag, has started sending supplies to Nepal to help in the aftermath of the devastating floods. The charity says it’s working with partners to get all manner of supplies into Nepal as quickly as possible. The floods are known to have killed more than a thousand people, with four thousand still unaccounted for.

6,000 people have signed a petition opposing plans for a new relief road in Chard. The Chard Eastern Relief Road will run through the residential area of Touches Lane and connect with a planned 230-home development north of the A30 Crewkerne Road. Opponents claim it will increase traffic and pollution levels, and damage the nature reserve at Chard reservoir. Somerset Council says it will shortly publish a report showing the proposed route of the relief road.

A new surgical centre has opened at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. The unit consists of eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms and 22 intensive care beds.

The Royal British Legion in Somerset is appealing for more volunteers to help run this year’s Poppy Appeal. Last year three-and-a-half thousand volunteers delivered the Poppy Appeal in Somerset, raising funds for service families in the greatest need.
