A Sonic Boom heard across Yeovil and South Somerset at the weekend has been identified as most likely being a meteor falling to earth. The huge bang at around 3 pm on Saturday lasted several seconds. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that one of its aircraft was not to blame.
The opening of Chard’s new public swimming pool had been put back to next year. South Somerset District Council says progress on the building has been delayed by Covid and poor weather. The pool was due to open later this year but won’t now open until March next year, at the earliest.
Yeovil’s e-scooter project is being extended to Chard and Crewkerne. Both towns can expect e-scooters to appear on local streets later this week. Organisers of the Glastonbury Festival are working on plans to hold a one-off concert this summer with people camping at the Worthy Farm site. Writing on social media, Emily Eavis said a licence application has been submitted to the local council but it was not definite the event would take place.
This week marks the 50th years of the Yeovil Samaritans. The support organisation, that takes phone calls from people in distress, began life in Yeovil at 10 Everton Road in March 1971 with just a handful of volunteers taking calls. Today, they have 120 volunteers and last year alone handled more than 22,000 calls from the public.
