An elderly couple in Chard say they feel trapped after the road outside their house was left un-usable by last week’s floods. 86-year-old Ralph Hutchings and his 76-year-old wife Eileen are having to use a tractor to get in and out of Scrapton Lane at Combe St Nicholas. Somerset County Council says it could be three weeks before the road is fully repaired. Eileen says it’s a worry but they will cope.
Three hundred tonnes of hay have been destroyed in a major barn fire at Yeovilton. It happened at around 3 pm on Saturday with crews from Wincanton, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Sherborne brought in to tackle the flames. Two houses in Kingsbury Episcopi that are still in the process of being built have also been damaged by fire. The incident in New Cross Hill is being investigated by police.
A Crewkerne man has appeared in court charged with damaging a car. Piers Farley, of Park Lane, at Wayford, pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay compensation of £740.
A dog had to be rescued when it got into difficulties in the River Yeo at Ilchester. Its owner, Linzi Ricketts waded into the water to bring the five-month-old Yorkie puppy to safety, otherwise, she says, it would almost certainly have drowned. Linzi, who recently underwent major brain surgery, says she’s glad to have saved the dog but it was a dangerous thing to have done.
