Tourism businesses in South Somerset say they're ready to re-open safely to visitors. A Yeovil man, accused of rape and sexual activity with a child, has been jailed for eight years and nine months. Somerset County Council is being asked to remove the new speed bumps on St Michael’s Avenue in Yeovil.

Tourism businesses in South Somerset say they're ready to re-open safely to visitors as soon as restrictions allow. The Prime Minister has announced that self-catering accommodation can open from the 12th of April, while hotels and bed and breakfast accommodations remain closed until the 17th of May. It means all sectors will miss the Easter weekend. Mark Edwards from Langport, who has holiday lets across the Westcountry, says the days the government have chosen are unhelpful.

A Yeovil man, accused of rape and sexual activity with a child, has been jailed for eight years and nine months after pleading guilty to the charges against him. Bristol Crown Court was told that Alan Barney of Roseberry Avenue in Yeovil abused the girl when she was thirteen and that a month earlier, he had forced himself on a woman. Both incidents were said to have happened in the Bristol area.

Somerset County Council is being asked to remove the new speed bumps on St Michael’s Avenue in Yeovil. Local residents claim the traffic calming measures are not working. They say the bumps are too shallow to slow speeding traffic. Somerset County Council says the original speed bumps were in a state of disrepair and needed replacing and that it’s too early to fully gauge the effectiveness of the new measures.
