Somerset Council is set to lose tens of millions of pounds from selling off properties, originally bought as commercial investments. The council has raised £128m to spend on day to day services by selling 28 retail parks, offices and shops, which were bought by the old district councils. Most were sold at a loss, so far totalling £39m.

A celebration of life for the late BBC Radio presenter, Emma Britton, took place on Saturday. Emma died last month at the age of 52 after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2025. She was carried by horse drawn carriage to the McMillan Theatre in Bridgwater, before the afternoon ceremony - with many taking to the streets along the route to pay their respects.

Hundreds of people gathered at Glastonbury Tor on Sunday morning to mark the summer solstice. It is generally recognised as the midsummer date with the longest amount of daylight and the shortest period of darkness.

This coincides with an amber heat health alert for the south west issued by the UK Health Security Agency which remains in place until 8pm tomorrow. The advice is to stay hydrated, avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keep your home cool.

A blind boxer from Somerset is celebrating after winning a first-of-its-kind match against another blind athlete. Jack Bateman from Bridgwater lost most of his sight when he was a teenager. Now 29, he competed for a charity belt at an event in Birmingham.

The area’s police and crime commissioner has expressed her support for a social media ban for under 16s. Clare Moody said the measures announced by the Prime Minister would help prevent 'real harm' to children. She also called on social media platforms to bring in more changes to support the ban.
