The NHS says twenty-six thousand people in the South West signed up to stop smoking in the past twelve months, an increase of eleven thousand on the previous year. Alison Bell, Director of Public Health in Somerset, says it’s welcome news as treating people for the symptoms of smoking costs the NHS a lot of money.
There will be no recycling or rubbish collections in Somerset next Monday because it is a Bank Holiday. Somerset Council says crews will do their usual routes, moving the date back a day from the normal pick-up time. As an example, households that usually have a Friday collection will have their collections rescheduled to Saturday, August 30th.

A new county-wide paediatric service is being planned for Somerset in response to the closure of the maternity unit at Yeovil Hospital. Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, which runs both Yeovil Hospital and Musgrove Park in Taunton, says the new service will operate on an equal share basis with consultant paediatricians working across both hospitals. Yeovil's maternity unit was closed on safety grounds in May and a date to reopen it has yet to be announced.
