Somerset Council says it won’t submit any further views on plans to redraw the county’s electoral boundaries, describing the process as “laborious, brutal and challenging”.
The Local Government Boundary Commission is reviewing ward boundaries across Somerset ahead of the 2027 local elections, with a proposal to reduce the number of seats on Somerset Council from 110 to 96.
The Commission is due to publish its final report in March, which will include the results of the public consultation on whether Somerset Council should have single-councillor divisions.
Somerset Council has decided to stick by its original submission to the Commission, saying it doesn’t want to spend any more time on the review.
Chairman of the Constitution and Governance Committee at Somerset Council, Councillor Ross Henley, says there’s been growing frustration among councillors about the time the review is taking, while others have warned that re-opening discussions on the proposed boundary changes could “open a Pandora’s Box”.
