People in Ilminster now have a greater say over planning applications in the town, after Somerset Council adopted a Local Neighbourhood Plan for Ilminster.
Residents in Ilminster now have a greater say over planning applications to build new homes in the town, after a Local Neighbourhood Plan for Ilminster was adopted by Somerset Council.
The plan has been in development for almost a decade, with work commencing in 2015 and public workshops held two years later. After a series of delays, residents went to the polls in August to vote on its recommendations, with 83% of voters adopting the plan.
It’s now been included in Somerset Council’s formal planning policy and will guide housing and commercial development in Ilminster until 2036.
The plan establishes design standards for new buildings, protects key green spaces, and identifies a primary housing site: the Canal Way development on the southern edge of Ilminster, where 360 homes have already been approved.
With the Neighbourhood Plan in place, Ilminster Town Council will be able to retain a larger proportion of the community infrastructure levy paid by local housing developers, meaning that more funding will be available for projects at local level in Ilminster.
