Free events as Yeovil takes part in Love Parks Week - Friday 25th July to Sunday 3rd August
Several Yeovil town parks are participating in Love Parks Week this year, from Friday, 25th July to Sunday, 3rd August, with a variety of free outdoor activities designed to engage residents and visitors in enjoying and appreciating local open spaces.
Love Parks is an annual event organised by the Keep Britain Tidy organisation. Love Parks is a week-long celebration highlighting the vital role green spaces play in boosting the health and wellbeing of residents and communities.
A range of events is planned across several of the 21 parks recently devolved to Yeovil Town Council from Somerset Council, including a display of Yeovil's parks' history, pond dipping, and litter picking, all free to all ages, with no booking required for any activity.
Starting on Tuesday, the 29th, there will be a short litter pick session at Penn Hill from 3 pm to 4:30 pm. Meeting at the Ninesprings café. This is an opportunity to meet the new Parks Engagement Officer and discuss your local park with them.
On Wednesday, 29 July, the Country Park rangers will be offering a community litter pick at Birchfield Park, located at Lyde Road, between 10 am and 3 pm.
The Yeovil Community Rivers Trust will host a family pond dip from 10:00 to 12:00 on Thursday, 30th, at Tanyards Bridge within Yeovil Country Park, where a range of minibeasts will be visible in the pond and an opportunity will be available to learn about life in the water.
There will also be a display of historical park-related artefacts and information at Ninesprings on Thursday, 31st, from 1.30 pm to 3.30pm. Join Joseph Lewis, Heritage Co-Ordinator from South Somerset Heritage Collection, for a pop-up photographic display of local parks complemented by a selection of gloving handling items, bottles from historical brewery companies, plus an exciting 'Outdoor Activities' Jigsaw.
On Friday, 1st August, from 2-4 pm, there will be another litter pick and another opportunity to meet the Parks engagement officer at Westfield.
Chair of Leisure and Environment Committee at Yeovil Town Council, Roy Spinner, said, ‘I am delighted to welcome these free events to our newly devolved parks, giving the community the opportunity to discover more parks and meet key partners’
Alongside these organised activities, there are always lots of parks with free play equipment, walking and running routes, picnic areas, Multi Use Games Areas and even free table tennis at Yeovil Recreation Centre if you bring your own bats and ball.
If you would like to join in with any of these free events and activities, please turn up. Wear suitable clothing and bring water, sunscreen, and a hat in hot weather. Litter pickers will be supplied when required, but consider wearing gloves if you have them.
