Somerset Council has released new figures showing a major step forward for local recycling.
The council’s annual recycling tracker shows that 5.4% more recycling is now being processed within Somerset compared to last year, keeping more waste close to home.
The report shows that 99% of all plastics collected in Somerset were recycled within the UK. Meanwhile, the total amount of waste reused or recycled locally rose by 2.5%, and in a significant environmental win, waste sent to landfill dropped by more than 57%.
Lead member for transport and waste services at Somerset Council, Councillor Richard Wilkins, says the results show real progress and transparency, adding that residents want to know what happens to their recycling, and it’s great to see more of it staying local.
Somerset is among the first councils able to collect toothpaste tubes at the kerbside, another sign of growing innovation in recycling.
People in Ilminster now have a greater say over planning applications in the town, after Somerset Council adopted a Local Neighbourhood Plan for Ilminster.
