Tidal Lagoon for West Somerset

Somerset could get a ferry link to Swansea in South Wales as part of a ten billion pound plan to build a tidal lagoon in the Bristol Channel to produce clean energy.

The project aims to create a tidal lagoon between Minehead and Watchet, which will provide enough electricity to power approximately two million homes.

A key component of the proposal includes the establishment of a terminal at Minehead. Under the proposals, a Roll-On/Roll-Off passenger ferry, capable of accommodating drive-on/drive-off vehicles, would provide an alternative to using the M4/M5 corridor and A39.

Researchers examining how travel could be transformed across the Bristol Channel have initiated discussions with the West Somerset Lagoon team regarding the ferry plan. They believe renewable electricity from the tidal energy scheme could power a fast ferry network, which would have transformative economic and social advantages for the region.

Dave Sampson, CEO of Ocean, the company leading the research, says they’re assessing demand for a fast ferry service connecting Swansea to destinations across the Bristol Channel.

He says integrating a zero-emission fast ferry with green energy production like the West Somerset Lagoon will not only relieve pressure on the motorway networks but also set a new benchmark for zero-emission maritime operations around the UK.
