Somerset’s Winter Coat Exchange is helping local people stay warm and supported through the colder months.
Now in its third year, the scheme, run by Somerset Council’s library service, encourages people to donate good-quality coats for adults and children. Anyone can take a coat without making a donation.
Last winter, more than 2,400 coats were donated, with over 2,000 finding new homes across the county. Extra donations went to Refugee Aid in Somerset.
Coats can be dropped off or collected at participating libraries in Yeovil, Chard, Street, and Ilminster.
Lead member for communities at Somerset Council, Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, notes that the scheme continues to grow every year, highlighting how libraries are becoming community hubs that offer warmth, support, and connection during challenging times. She says the initiative is helping families save money while ensuring no one goes cold this winter.
