A new NHS dental practice in Crewkerne says it won’t start operating at full capacity until July due to staff shortages. Crewkerne Dental Care, in Market Street, is the third NHS practice to open in Somerset in the past eight months. When an online portal opened in April for people to express an interest in an appointment, 4,500 requests were received in just four hours.
Somerset Council says it has no plans to show England matches in the World Cup on the Big Screen in Yeovil. The giant LED screen at The Triangle in Lower Middle Street was installed with the intention of using it to bring people together in one space to watch major national events. The Council says due to safety concerns, showing England games in the World Cup on the Big Screen is not feasible.
A Year-12 student in Chard has been named Young Person of the Year. Sami, from Holyrood Sixth Form, and is a cadet with St John Ambulance, received the honour at the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards which celebrate exceptional individuals under 21 who live, work, or study in Somerset and demonstrate resilience, courage, selflessness, and excellence.
The line-up has been announced for this year’s Home Farm Festival. The event, which raises money for the charity School in a Bag, takes place and at Home Farm in Chilthorne Domer, from Friday, June 12th, to Sunday, June 14th and features nine stages, 150 bands, a circus, kids' cinema, casino-style entertainment, and a variety of world food stalls.
A Somerset family has been thanked after completing a 73-mile walk raising money for a third world charity. Emma Aitken and her three children who live in Butleigh, near Glastonbury, spent the school half term walking the Cumbrian Way, raising £2,500 for St Peter's Life-Line in Kenya. The charity says the money will help fund its free clinic service for disabled children in Kenya.
