    Details have been published of events to be held in Chard in June to mark the Queens Platinum Jubilee. Members of Somerset County Council have voted to set aside an initial £250,000 to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in the county. Police are seeking witnesses to an attack on a man in Crewkerne and people in Somerset are being asked to vote for places of historical significance to be placed on a list.

    Details have been published of events to be held in Chard in June to mark the Queens Platinum Jubilee. A torch-lit lantern parade on Thursday, June 2nd will be followed by the lighting of a beacon at Crowshute Link. On Friday, June 3rd, a Civic Parade and Service of Thanksgiving will be held in St. Mary’s Church and on the same evening a variety show will be staged at the Guildhall entitled “Queen of the Commonwealth”. On Sunday, June 5th, Holyrood Street will be closed to traffic for a street party, with entertainment for families, a brass band, and food outlets.

    Members of Somerset County Council have voted to set aside an initial £250,000 to support Ukrainian refugees arriving in the county. At the meeting, the Council Leader, David Fothergill, gave an emotional speech describing the “heartbreaking suffering and remarkable acts of bravery” of people in Ukraine. He said he hoped Somerset people would host a “generous number” of refugees.

    Police are seeking witnesses to an attack on a man in Crewkerne. It happened when he was pulled out of his car, and punched in the face by another man, as he was exiting the Lidl’s car park in the George Shopping Centre on Sunday, March 13th at around 2.20 pm. If you have dashcam footage or can help the police in other ways with their enquiries please call the non-emergency number 101.

    People in Somerset are being asked to vote for places of historical significance to be placed on a list. The County has been chosen to be part of a government scheme for people to nominate places in their communities they think are important. If accepted onto the list, the entries would then be considered in any planning decisions.
