    The sale of the former Oscar Mayer site in Chard to Numatic International, makers of the Henry vacuum cleaner, has been confirmed.     The sale of the former Oscar Mayer site in Chard to Numatic International, makers of the Henry vacuum cleaner, has been confirmed. Numatic says it’s investing £30 million in converting the site on the Millfield Road Industrial Estate into a state-of-the-art production facility with raw materials entering at one end and finished products leaving at the other with the creation of new employment opportunities.

    It will be several more weeks yet before the first Afghan families start arriving in South Somerset. South Somerset District Council says it’s working with partners to support the Government’s “warm welcome” programme whilst ensuring that vulnerable people and families in need already in South Somerset are not disadvantaged.

    South Western Ambulance who operates in South Somerset says it’s still experiencing unprecedented high levels of calls. On Monday this week, the service was handling a 999 call every 25 seconds. They’re again asking the public to only call 999 if someone is seriously injured or ill and there is a risk to life.

    Garden waste collections across South Somerset are about to restart following a six-week break. Somerset Waste Partnership says garden waste will start to get collected again beginning from next Monday, September 13th. The six-week suspension was introduced for staff to be redeployed on collecting general household waste.

    A Chard man who next week will celebrate his 100th birthday says the key to a long life is happiness. Peter Moore worked as a Maths teacher at Holyrood School in Chard and served in the RAF. Peter says his secret to living to 100 is being happy every day, greeting everyone he meets with a big smile.
