Schools in Somerset are either partially or completely shut today due to strike action by teachers. Members of the NEU union have stopped work in a dispute over pay. Last-ditch talks to stop the strike between the union and the government ended without agreement with the government saying it was providing an extra 2 billion pounds in school funding. A list of the Somerset schools affected by today’s teacher strike action can be viewed at the bottom of the page.

A Chard motorist has appeared in court in connection with an accident at Cricket St Thomas in which a motorcyclist died. Roger Burt of The Maltings in Chard pleaded guilty to causing the death by careless driving when he appeared at Yeovil Magistrates Court. He was banned from driving for 12 months and told to re-pass the driving test before getting his licence back.

Sherborne Golf Club has applied for permission to build a new covered driving range. If the application is successful, a twelve-bay driving range, together with new floodlighting, will be built next to an existing car park.

A TV documentary is being made about the Fleet Air Arm. Called ‘Britain’s Top Guns’ and filmed at RNAS Yeovilton, it tells the story of the formation of the Fleet Air Arm in 1937 to the present.

A Somerset woman is planning to represent Great Britain at the World Transplant Games in Australia. Keeleigh John was given a new liver and kidney ten years ago and is hoping to compete in Melbourne in April. However, before she can be certain of doing so, she needs to raise a further two thousand pounds towards her target of three and a half thousand pounds to pay for the trip.

A butcher in Yeovil has raised £400 for the RNLI. Brett Moulding of Loders Butchers in Union Street raised the money selling raffle tickets to his customers in the run-up to Christmas.
