A Yeovil man has been jailed after an incident in the town in March where a police officer fired a gun. Officers were called to Rosebery Avenue on the afternoon of Monday March 23rd after reports of a man carrying what was believed to be a handgun. In an update last week, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that William Martin, aged 38 of Monmouth Road, pleaded guilty to possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence in April. He was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years.
A Frome warehouse fire last week is being treated as suspicious. An investigation has been launched into the blaze at Western Warehouse on the Saxonvale site on Wednesday, with fire crews from Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire attending the incident. In total, more than 100 firefighters brought the flames under control and prevented damage to the nearby Silk Mill and former Notts Industries building.
The summer lifeguard service returned to Brean and Burnham on Sea at the weekend. Last year, the service rescued or provided first aid to more than 100 people. Starting its new season for 2026, the RNLI warns us of the dangers present on Somerset’s beaches including mud, fast incoming tides and strong offshore winds.
Ten members of Chard Rugby Club arrived in Twickenham yesterday after taking on a gruelling 150-mile cycle ride from Chard to the London stadium. The route took the team through Somerset and Wiltshire and arrived at the home of England rugby on Sunday afternoon. The ride was put in place, partly to mark the Chard club’s 150th anniversary but also to raise money for the My Name’s Doddie Foundation, which helps fund Motor Neurone Disease research.
