Somerset Prostate Cancer Support Group says a decision not to introduce mass screening for prostate cancer is the wrong one. The National Screening Committee last week rejected calls for a nationwide screening programme, saying the overall harms outweigh the benefits for most men. Gordon Clark, who set up the Somerset Prostate Cancer Support Group three years ago, says early detection is vital and believes groups like theirs provide an important service to men across the county.
A Martock woman has been banned from driving for 28 months after being caught behind the wheel while nearly three-and-a-half times the legal drink-drive limit. Magistrates heard that Alexandra Osmond, aged 61, of Murdoch Lane, was seen scraping her car against a wall and repeatedly hitting a kerb in Vicarage Street, Yeovil, before being stopped by police. She was also fined £865 and ordered to pay a £346 surcharge and £85 in costs.
A care agency based in Yeovil has been told it must improve after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. Wisteria Care, which supports older people living with dementia and physical disabilities, was rated as requiring improvement. Inspectors found care plans and risk assessments did not always contain the necessary information. However, the report noted that clients and their relatives were largely positive about the care provided.
Drivers are being warned of delays on the A37 at Lydford Cross, where work to install new traffic lights is due to begin on June 22nd. Somerset Council says the existing signals are more than 30 years old and have reached the end of their working life. The project is expected to continue until September, with four-way temporary traffic lights in place throughout the work.
Somerset Council is marking Volunteers’ Week by thanking the more than 1,400 volunteers who help deliver coumcil services across the county. Volunteers support around 20 council services, from driving people to essential appointments and helping young people, to caring for Somerset’s countryside.
