Somerset Council have begun what’s described as the biggest road resurfacing programme in four years in the county this week. The surface treatment promises to be greener and more cost-effective to maintain and the project will see a 1,000,000 square metres of road surface dressed in Somerset. Affected roads will see short-term road closures or stop-go signs in place. The work should only take a day in each location and advanced notice will be given to communities and road users.

Meanwhile, Wessex Water are due to carry out emergency works on East Street in Chard next week. Repairs will be carried out overnight from Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4th September outside the Church Hall.

Investigators have started their probe into what caused a fire that seriously damaged the Dunelm store in Yeovil at the weekend. Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service say that the fire damaged thirty percent of the roof, with all the building’s contents damaged by smoke and water. The store is expected to remain closed until further notice.

A Somerset tourism boss says this summer has been disappointing for accommodation providers. Chief executive of Visit Somerset, John Turner, says the county saw a twenty percent fall in bookings compared with last year and that work needs to be done to address the financial hit.
