Gardeners in Somerset are being urged not to cut their grass this month to help benefit wildlife. Research by the charity, Plantlife, shows that not cutting the grass in May can make a real difference to the numbers of birds and insects in people's gardens.

A Langport man has appeared in court charged with assault. Simon Hebert of Bow Street, Langport, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault at Taunton Magistrates Court. Hebert was fined £480 with costs and had a community order made against him.

The Blue Ball Inn in Bruton could reopen if plans to alter the building are given the green light by South Somerset District Council. The Blue Ball on Coombe Street, formerly known as The White Hart, closed in 2020. Owners, Cosmos Bruton Ltd, have applied to reopen the hotel and provide additional rooms within the neighbouring Number One Hotel. South Somerset District Council’s expected to make a decision on the application by the early summer.

The village shop in Charlton Horethorne has been put up for sale. The business in North Road is described as having consistent local trade as well as good seasonal tourism trade and is offered with a guide price of £275,000.

A start-up business school has been launched in Somerset to encourage people aged 50 and over with a business idea to get started. Figures show over half-a-million people aged over 50 are no longer in work since the pandemic.

Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis has announced a further twenty homes for social rent will be built in the village where he grew up. He started the project in his home village Pilton using funds generated by Glastonbury Festival saying he wanted to provide affordable houses for working people.
